Quality and Reliability Engineering: Variability and Its Impact (HS)

Students will learn the basic concept of variability and its impact on day to day activity in
life and on business performance in general. A die tossing experiment (activity 1) is included to
demonstrate the random process and concept of uncertainty. Activity 2 (sampling experiment) explains
how the product quality is monitored during manufacturing and finally activity 3 (helicopter design)
included to show selecting best product design under uncertain environment.

objectives

1. To make students aware of the existence of randomness and uncertainty in our day‐to‐day life
2. To demonstrate the application of few selected tools in dealing with uncertainly and managing
quality of products or services
3. Finally, to show how uncertainty or variability in day‐to‐day operations can affect the overall
