The two leaflets of a lipid vesicle are an example for a two-compartment carrier, where cargo such as lipids, sterols, or amphipathic drug molecules can partition between two reservoirs. We develop a stochastic model that describes the transfer kinetics of cargo among the two compartments of a carrier, starting from an arbitrary initial distribution. A Fokker-Planck equation is derived from a set of discrete kinetic equations and then solved analytically, leading to a detailed understanding of how molecular distributions evolve in time until reaching their equilibrium distributions.
