Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a current primary concern in the environment. PFAS species have been detected in many waterways that supply drinking water to both major and minor cities around the world. Due to the stability of the compounds and their health effects at extremely low concentrations, removing them from the water is a necessity. This project is in the early stages of the development of a cellulose-based material that can capture PFAS without requiring energy-intensive processes such as reverse osmosis or nanofiltration. This material has the potential to be made into filter materials that would be able to be deployed for the removal of PFAS from the water stream. This would allow for the removal of PFAS from water sources around the globe at minimal cost.
