Hemp-Reinforced Alginate Biocomposites: Effects of Fiber and Plasticizer Content on Mechanical Performance
Session
Poster #21
The growing environmental burden associated with persistent synthetic materials has increased interest in renewable biopolymers and natural-fiber composites. Sodium alginate is a biodegradable polysaccharide with potential for sustainable material applications, while hemp provides a renewable fibrous reinforcement that may improve structural performance. This study investigates calcium-crosslinked sodium alginate biocomposites reinforced with hemp fibers. Composite sheets were fabricated using 2% sodium alginate with different hemp concentrations and varying glycerol contents to evaluate how reinforcement and plasticization influence material behavior. An unreinforced alginate formulation was included as a control. The materials are being characterized through mechanical testing and complementary physicochemical analysis to understand relationships among composition, structure, and performance. The broader objective is to establish a formulation framework for renewable alginate-hemp biocomposites and identify compositions suitable for future evaluation under water-contact conditions. Planned work will examine swelling, dimensional stability, mechanical-property retention, and degradation during aqueous exposure. This research aims to support the development of more sustainable materials with reduced long-term environmental persistence.
