Bioaccumulation is the buildup of pollutants, chemicals, or heavy metals in the tissues of biota. In this contribution, the focus is on downstream effects of metal bioaccumulation from producer species such as algae to one consumer species complex (Aedes and Culex mosquitoes). Mosquito larvae hatch in freshwater aquatic environments and feed off algae in those waters. If the larvae bioaccumulate those metals from the algae, it is likely that net bioaccumulation will continue to trickle up to mosquito predators, and predators of those, and so on. To begin to understand metal concentrations in mosquitos from Lake Darling in north central North Dakota, a method for analyzing the concentration of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb in mosquitoes was developed. Cohorts of mosquitoes were trapped for nine weeks over the summer: four traps deployed around Lake Darling and one on the Minot State University campus. Random samples from each weekly cohort were desiccated and powdered. One hundred milligrams of powder from each week were then digested in a 1:1 solution of trace grade nitric acid (67-70%) and hydrogen peroxide (30%) at 80°C in a heated ultrasonic bath for 30 minutes. Resulting solutions were analyzed via Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (MP-AES). The concentration of Al in each cohort was able to be quantified with an average of 134 ppm. Cr, Cu, and Pb were detected in some samples, and Cd was not able to be detected in any.
