VCSU Macroinvertebrate lab is entering year 3 of a State Wildlife Grant to identify mussels and aquatic insect populations for addition to lists of Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) and Species of Greatest Information Need (SGIN). My project is focused on Mayfly populations in North Dakota waters. We gathered information about the Mayfly species on the current lists and are hoping to propose potential new candidates for each list, in conjunction with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are widely known as good indicators of water quality. They spend most of their life cycle as aquatic larvae living in lakes, rivers, and streams. After transitioning from larvae to adult they will mate, the females will lay their eggs, and the adults die within hours to several days after emergence. We have collected both larval and adult specimens from throughout the state. Specimen collections were done by a variety of methods including using Triangle nets, a modified bottom dredge, drift nets, sweep nets, and a blacklight sheet set up for night collections. Georeferencing and habitat data were collected for each site. We have documented 3 new species for the state. We are taking high-resolution photographs of exemplary specimens of many of the species collected. Collected data will be summarized and made available on online access platforms such as iNaturalist and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
