BVLOS High-Altitude UAV Imagery for Scalable Precision Agriculture in the Northern Great Plains
Session
Concurrent Presentation Session B, Exhibition Room
Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offer a promising pathway to overcome the spatial and operational limitations of conventional UAV-based crop monitoring. This talk will introduce BVLOS and evaluate the performance of high-altitude BVLOS imagery for field-scale precision agriculture applications across large commercial farms in North Dakota. Multispectral and RGB datasets were acquired using fixed-wing UAV platforms operating at varying altitudes and flight parameters, and compared with conventional low-altitude UAV flights. Key performance indicators included spatial resolution, vegetation index sensitivity, crop stress detection accuracy, and operational efficiency. Results demonstrate that while high-altitude BVLOS flights reduce spatial resolution, they significantly improve coverage efficiency and maintain sufficient sensitivity for detecting crop variability and stress patterns at the management zone level. Trade-offs between altitude, speed, and data quality are quantified to inform optimal flight configurations. This work highlights the potential of BVLOS-enabled data acquisition to support scalable, cost-effective precision agriculture, particularly in regions characterized by large field sizes. The findings contribute to the development of operational guidelines and decision-support frameworks for integrating BVLOS technologies into commercial agricultural workflows, while also addressing workforce and infrastructure needs for advanced UAS deployment.
