INSTEM: Building STEM Pathways for Native American Students in North Dakota
Session
Poster #40
INSTEM is a STEM academy operated through the Great Plains STEM Education Center at Valley City State University. Founded in 2018, the academy is designed to increase STEM career awareness, academic self-efficacy, and college-going aspirations among Native American students. Through a statewide application process, Native American students from across North Dakota are eligible to apply for participation. Students participate in week-long summer residential experiences that follow a progressive, multi-year curriculum. Early experiences provide a broad survey of STEM disciplines and careers, while advanced cohorts engage in extended STEM projects and college-credit opportunities. The academy combines faculty-led instruction, laboratory experiences, field trips, industry engagement, culturally relevant learning opportunities, and campus living experiences designed to increase student confidence in STEM and higher education. Since its inception, INSTEM has grown from 12 students in 2018 to 116 students in 2026, representing more than 420 cumulative student experiences. This poster highlights the INSTEM curriculum model, program growth, and lessons learned in developing sustainable pathways that encourage Native American students to pursue STEM education and careers.
