Strawberry DNA Extraction (ES)

Individuals of the same kind of plant or animal are recognizable as similar but can also vary in many ways. Students will use strawberries of varying shapes, sizes and colors and extract the DNA to compare the similarities and differences of the observable variations of traits that exist among similar organisms.

objectives

• Collect data and record the variations in traits among a group of similar organisms
• Use evidence to support an explanation
• Analyze data to make sense of phenomena

national next gen standards

• LS3.A: Inheritance of Traits. Many characteristics of organisms are inherited from their parents.
