ND-ACES researcher Dr. Kalpana Katti has been named to the 2024 class of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellows. AAAS Fellows are recognized for their contributions to and achievements in their fields of expertise. AAAS is one of the world’s largest general scientific societies and is the publisher of the Science family of journals.

Dr. Katti is a University Distinguished Professor in NDSU’s Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering department. She has been a leader on the ND EPSCoR RII Track-1, New Discoveries in the Advanced Interface of Computation, Engineering, and Science (ND-ACES), since its inception.

“EPSCoR has been a very valuable resource of funding and a great networking avenue that has helped many researchers across campus including myself,” Dr. Katti said.

“The networking has not been just between faculty researchers but also a great platform for students to interact, present research and grow. The ND-ACES project as funded has been ten years in the making with my vision and efforts to build the team of energetic researchers in the area of cancer metastasis. I am happy that the project has been fruitful, and I am thankful to the EPSCoR leadership.”

ND-ACES builds research capacity to better understand design rules that govern in vitro biointerfaces and influence in vivo decisions surrounding the understanding of biochemistry and the cell biology of cancer cells and tumors. Dr. Katti has served as a co-lead for Center for Cellular Biointerfaces in Science and Engineering (CCBSE), where she spearheads work on cancer test beds using patient-derived cancer cells.

“Dr. Katti being named an AAAS Fellow is well deserved and not a surprise,” said Jim Doolittle, Head of Operations for ND EPSCoR. “She has been a major asset in the ND-ACES project, providing cutting edge research, leadership, and mentorship.”

Dr. Katti’s previous awards include the Peltier Award for Innovation, College of Engineering Researcher of the Year, National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the Roon Award from the Federation of Societies of Coatings Technology.

Congratulations to Dr. Katti on being recognized for your work with this prestigious fellowship!
